Years of a struggling economy have sparked an entrepreneurial boom in Portugal with young, innovative minds, unable to find fixed employment taking the opportunity to think outside the box and offer creative solutions to everyday problems. Since the explosion of startups, the Portuguese economy has begun its healing process and the GDP has been steadily rising in the last few years.
The Portuguese government have been backing the startup scene, most notably with the Portugal Ventures scheme, a €450 million fund investing in technology-based companies as well as in more traditional Portuguese ventures in tourism and industry.
In Lisbon, new incubators have helped kickstart and develop the scene including startup Lisboa which has office space for over 80 startups. The Lisbon based accelerator program, The Lisbon Challenge, is now recognised by Fundacity at the fourth most active program in Europe with alumni in the last years moving on to Seedcamp, TechStars and Y Combinator. Furthermore, 40% of all companies emerging from the program have secured investment.
Investors include Caixa Capital who are partnered with The Lisbon Challenge and Faber Ventures, known for having a hands on approach with the startups they invest in.
